How to Reach Bet Dwarka

This is the part that has genuinely changed. Bet Dwarka is an island off Okha, roughly 30 km from Dwarka city. For decades you reached it only by boat from Okha jetty. Since February 2024 the Sudarshan Setu, at 2.32 km India's longest cable-stayed bridge, connects Okha directly to the island, so you can now drive across at any hour instead of waiting for a ferry. Take a private cab or bus from Dwarka to Okha, about 45 minutes, then cross the bridge, park in the paid lot on the island and walk or take an auto to the temple. Boats still run from Okha for those who want the sea crossing, though they can pause in rough monsoon weather.

On the way from Dwarka to Okha you pass Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, so most travellers fold the two into one smooth half-day.

What Is Bet Dwarka?

Bet Dwarka, also called Shankhodhar, is believed to be where Lord Krishna made his personal residence, apart from his royal capital at Dwarka. The name is often linked to the word for a gift, recalling the beloved story of Sudama arriving with a humble offering of beaten rice and being received here by his childhood friend. Where the mainland Dwarkadhish temple honours Krishna the king, Bet Dwarka holds Krishna the friend and family man. The island is old enough to appear in the Mahabharata as Antardvipa and underwater surveys nearby have turned up remains pointing to very ancient settlement.

Bet Dwarkadhish Temple

The heart of the island. This roughly five-century-old temple in the Pushtimarg tradition enshrines Krishna with Rukmini and is smaller but far more intimate than the grand Jagat Mandir on the mainland. Devotees offer tulsi, flowers, coconut and sweets and the rice offering echoes the tale of Sudama.

Hanuman Dandi Temple

At the southern tip of the island, this temple is unusual for showing Hanuman together with his son Makardhwaj, a pairing you rarely see elsewhere. The setting, facing the open sea, is calm and worth the short ride across the island.

Shankhnarayan Temple and the Beaches

The Shankhnarayan or Shankhoddhar temple recalls the demon Shankhasura slain by Krishna, which gives the island its other name. Around it lie quiet beaches with white sand and conch shells and in the right season you may spot dolphins offshore. It is a gentle, unhurried counterpoint to the temple crowds.

Bet Dwarka Temple Timings and Darshan

The Bet Dwarkadhish temple follows the Pushtimarg pattern of darshan slots through the day, opening in the morning and evening with a midday break, so early morning is the calmest time for darshan. Timings shift on festival days, so confirm before you go and plan the island around your mainland Dwarkadhish darshan so the two do not clash.

Best Time to Visit and Tips

• Go November to February for pleasant weather or during Janmashtami for the atmosphere, though crowds swell then.

• Start early. Reach Okha by around 6:30 AM for the calmest darshan and, if you take a boat, the smoothest sea.

• Carry cash for parking, autos and offerings and wear modest, light clothing for the temples.

What I Tell First-Time Visitors

Now that the bridge is open, people treat Bet Dwarka as a quick fifteen-minute stop. I ask them to slow down. The magic of the island is not the drive across, impressive as it is. It is standing in the small, old temple where the Sudama story lives, then walking out to Hanuman Dandi with the sea on three sides. Give it two unhurried hours, not twenty minutes and go early before the day-trippers arrive.
