Chennai to Dwarka Distance: Routes, Train, Flight and the Best Way

Chennai to Dwarka is a very long haul, more than two thousand kilometres, so the useful question is not the raw distance but how to cross it sensibly. Chennai to Dwarka Distance and Time

By road, Chennai to Dwarka is roughly 2,224 km and the driving time runs from about 37 hours upward depending on the route. Here are the three main options, though as you will see, driving is rarely the right choice.

The NH48 route is the fastest at about 37 hours over 2,224 km. The NH16 and NH52 route is marginally shorter but slightly slower and the pure NH52 route is both longer and far slower at 48 hours. For a journey of this scale, the differences barely matter, because no one should drive it in one go anyway.

Should You Drive? The Honest Take

Let me be completely honest, because it saves a lot of pain: you should not drive from Chennai to Dwarka. At more than 2,200 km and 37 hours or more, it is a two to three day drive across half the country and there is no reward in it that a flight or train does not give you faster and more safely. The only people who should even consider it are serious road-trippers with a week to spare and a co-driver, planning multiple overnight halts. For everyone else and certainly for pilgrims and families, the air and rail options below are the sensible way and you can always hire a car once you reach Gujarat.

By Air: The Sensible Way

Flying is how almost every Chennai traveller reaches Dwarka and it turns a two-day journey into a single day. Dwarka has no airport of its own, so you fly to a nearby one and drive in:

• Jamnagar Airport is the closest, about 137 to 141 km from Dwarka, roughly 2.5 hours by road, ideal if you can find a convenient connection.

• Rajkot Airport, about 215 km away, has the best flight frequency and is usually the easiest to reach from Chennai with a single stop at Mumbai or Ahmedabad, then about 4 hours by road.

• Porbandar Airport is nearer, around 95 to 100 km from Dwarka, but its flights are limited and Ahmedabad, the largest airport, is farthest but the best connected.

There is no non-stop flight from Chennai to the small Gujarat airports, so expect one stop, usually at Mumbai or Ahmedabad, for a total journey of about 7.5 to 8 hours door to door. From the airport, a private cab is the simplest way to reach Dwarka and to tour the region afterwards.

By Train

Dwarka has its own railway station, well connected to Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat and Mumbai, so the train is the budget route. The catch is that there is no direct train from Chennai to Dwarka; you travel with a change, most commonly via Ahmedabad and the total journey runs roughly 34 to 38 hours. It is long, but a sleeper or AC coach over two nights is far more comfortable than driving and it costs a fraction of flying. From the station it is a short ride to the Dwarkadhish darshan. For most Chennai pilgrims, though, the train is a fallback to flying rather than the first choice, purely because of the time.

The Smart Combination: Fly Plus Overnight Train

Here is the trick seasoned travellers use, in both directions. Fly from Chennai to Ahmedabad, which has frequent, cheap connections, then take an overnight train from Ahmedabad to Dwarka, arriving fresh in the morning. On the way back, do the reverse: an overnight train from Dwarka to Ahmedabad, then a morning or afternoon flight home. This way neither the first nor the last night of your trip is wasted sitting in transit, you are either at a temple or asleep on a moving train. It is often the best balance of time, comfort and cost for a long-distance pilgrimage.

What Awaits You at Dwarka

Once you arrive, the long journey is worth every hour. Dwarka is one of the four sacred char dham and the legendary kingdom of Lord Krishna. The soaring Dwarkadhish Temple is the heart of it, with its flag changed several times a day and a moving evening aarti. Nearby lie Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and Bet Dwarka island, now reached by the Sudarshan Setu bridge. Plan your first evening around the current Dwarkadhish temple timings so you catch the aarti after your long trip.

Make the Journey Worthwhile: Extend the Trip

Since you are travelling so far, see more than Dwarka alone. The famous Somnath Jyotirlinga is a natural pairing, Gir National Park offers the only wild Asiatic lions and there is plenty more among the places to visit in Dwarka. Best Time to Visit and Tips

October to March is the ideal season, with pleasant weather for temples and travel. Book flights and trains well ahead in this peak period, especially around Janmashtami in Dwarka. Compare the Jamnagar and Rajkot flight routes, since frequency and fares vary and consider the fly-plus-overnight-train combination to save a day. How I Advise Travellers from Chennai

When a family from Chennai asks me the best way, I never suggest driving. I tell them to fly, usually via Mumbai or Ahmedabad to Rajkot or Jamnagar and let us collect them at the airport so they reach Dwarka the same day, tired but not broken. If they want to save money and do not mind two nights on rails, the train via Ahmedabad is a comfortable, classic pilgrim journey. And if they want the smartest balance, I point them to the fly-to-Ahmedabad-then-overnight-train plan, which wastes no daytime at all.
