Dwarka to Girnar Distance: Routes, Time and the Best Way to Do It

I am Harsh Rawat, born in Dwarka and a guide on this coast for more than 8 years. This is a long haul rather than a quick hop and how you plan it matters more than the raw number. Dwarka to Girnar Distance and Time

There are three driving routes and the two NH51 options are the ones to use.

Both NH51 routes cover the same 211 km in under four hours and are effectively identical. The GJ SH32 route is longer at 228 km and adds almost an hour, so keep it only as a backup if the highway is disrupted.

Which Route Should You Take?

Take NH51. At 211 km and about 3 hours 45 minutes it is the shortest and fastest and it is a smooth coastal highway for much of the way. The second NH51 option is the same drive give or take five minutes. The 228 km GJ SH32 route costs you an extra hour for no benefit, so avoid it unless you must.

Do Not Do It in One Stretch: Break the Journey

Here is the advice that matters most. Nearly four hours one way makes a same-day return exhausting and pointless, so treat this as a leg of a circuit rather than a day trip. The natural break is Porbandar, roughly halfway, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi with the Kirti Mandir and Sudama temple. Better still, route through Somnath and stay a night there, since Girnar is only about 99 km beyond Somnath. Done that way, the drive becomes part of the pilgrimage instead of a slog.

Girnar Is Not Gir: Clearing the Confusion

This catches many travellers, so it is worth stating plainly. Girnar is a sacred temple mountain beside Junagadh, famous for its long stone stairway to shrines at the summit. Gir National Park is a different place entirely, the forest reserve of the Asiatic lions. The names sound alike and both lie in this region, but they are separate destinations with separate trips. How to Travel from Dwarka to Girnar

A private cab is by far the most sensible option for this distance, letting you stop at Porbandar and control the pace. State and private buses run between Dwarka, Porbandar and Junagadh for budget travellers and Junagadh has its own railway station if you prefer the train. From Junagadh, the base of the mountain is close; the Junagadh to Girnar distance is only about 7 km.

What Awaits at Girnar

Girnar is one of the oldest living pilgrimages in India, sacred to both Hindus and Jains. Here is what you climb toward:

• The 9,999 steps: the traditional stone stairway to the summit temples, a serious but rewarding climb.

• The Girnar ropeway: at about 2.3 km, one of the world's longest temple ropeways, generally running from around 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM if you would rather not climb.

• The temples: Amba Mata, the Gorakhnath peak, the Guru Dattatreya shrine at the summit and revered Jain temples including Neminath.

• Bhavnath fair: around Maha Shivratri, the base fills with sadhus and a great fair, an extraordinary time to visit if you can handle the crowds.

Best Time to Visit and Tips

October to March is the season for both the long drive and the climb. Leave Dwarka early, plan a proper lunch stop at Porbandar and if you intend to walk the steps, aim to be at the base by dawn the next morning after an overnight nearby. How I Actually Route This

I never send anyone straight from Dwarka to Girnar and back in a day; it wastes the trip and the mountain. What I do is build a circuit: Dwarka first, then down the coast with a Porbandar stop, a night at Somnath for the temple and evening aarti and only then the short hop to Girnar the next morning, fresh for the climb or the ropeway. Broken that way, 211 km stops being a chore and becomes three of the best days in Gujarat. That sequencing is the whole point of how Experience My India plans this route.
