How to Plan a Diu Tour: Days, Best Time, Route and What to See

How to Plan a Diu Tour
Quick answer

To plan a Diu tour, allow two days, visit between October and March, and reach Diu by its own airport, the nearby Delwada or Veraval railheads, or by road from the Somnath coast. Cover Diu Fort, Nagoa and Ghoghla beaches, St Paul's Church and Naida Caves. Experience My India can fold Diu into your Gujarat trip.

How Do You Plan a Diu Tour?

Planning a Diu tour comes down to five simple decisions: when to go, how many days to give it, how to reach the island, what to see and where to stay. I am Harsh Rawat, born on this coast and guiding it for more than 8 years and I send a lot of guests on the Somnath Dwarka Tour Package onward to Diu, because it is the perfect relaxed ending to a pilgrimage trip. Diu is a former Portuguese enclave and a Union Territory, a small island off the southern tip of Saurashtra, with a laid-back, coastal character quite unlike the rest of Gujarat.

Work through those five decisions in order and the whole trip falls into place. Here is how I guide each one.

How Many Days Do You Need for Diu?

Two days is enough for Diu. The island is small and in a comfortable two-day visit you can see the main fort, relax on a couple of beaches, wander the old Portuguese quarter and still have time to do nothing by the sea, which is rather the point of Diu. If you are short on time, even a single full day covers the headline sights, though you will feel rushed. Three days suits anyone who wants to slow right down and treat Diu as a beach break.

Best Time to Visit Diu

The best time to visit Diu is October to March, when the coastal weather is cool and pleasant and the sea is calm and inviting. This winter window is ideal for the beaches and for sightseeing on foot. Summer, from April to June, is hot and humid, while the monsoon brings rain and rough seas, so most travellers stick to the October to March season. Winter is also when Diu pairs most comfortably with a wider Saurashtra pilgrimage trip.

How to Reach Diu

Diu is well connected for such a small place and you have three ways in.

  • By air: Diu has its own airport, with flights linking it to Mumbai and other cities, which is the quickest way in.

  • By train: the nearest railheads are Delwada, very close to Diu and Veraval, the larger junction on the Somnath coast, both connected to Diu by road.

  • By road: Diu is reached over bridges from the Gujarat mainland near Una and it is an easy drive from Somnath and the wider Saurashtra coast.

Most of my guests reach Diu by road as part of a coastal circuit. If you are coming from the temples, see our guides on the Diu to Somnath distance and the Diu to Dwarka distance and our how to reach Somnath guide to get to this coast in the first place.

Top Places to See in Diu

Diu packs a lot of character into a small island. These are the sights I never let a guest miss.

A Simple 2-Day Diu Itinerary

Day 1: Forts, town and sunset

Start with Diu Fort in the cooler morning, then explore the old Portuguese town and St Paul's Church. After lunch, visit the Naida Caves and the INS Khukri Memorial and end the day watching the sunset over the sea, perhaps from the fort walls or a quiet beach.

Day 2: Beaches and the coast

Give the second day to the beaches. Spend the morning at Nagoa Beach for a swim and the hoka palms, then move to Ghoghla Beach for water sports or a long walk. Fit in the shoreside Gangeshwar Temple and a view of Panikotha before you leave. It is a gentle, satisfying rhythm that never feels rushed.

Where to Stay and Practical Tips

Diu has stays for every budget, from beach resorts near Nagoa to simple guesthouses in town. For the wider circuit, our hotels overview helps you plan where to sleep across your Gujarat trip. A few things worth knowing before you go.

  • Diu is a Union Territory, so its rules and relaxed coastal atmosphere differ from mainland Gujarat. Many travellers notice the gentler, holiday feel at once.

  • No special permit is needed. Diu is part of India, so Indian travellers simply arrive as they would anywhere else.

  • Rent a two-wheeler or hire a cab to get around. The island is small and easy to explore at your own pace.

  • Carry sun protection and light clothing. Even in winter the midday coastal sun is strong.

What I Tell Every Guest About Diu

After 8 years and more than fifty thousand travellers, here is my honest advice. Do not treat Diu as a tick-box sightseeing stop, treat it as the rest after the pilgrimage. Somnath feeds the soul and Diu, just down the coast, lets you exhale. The best Diu trips I plan are the ones where guests slow down, sit on Nagoa Beach under the hoka palms and let the sea do the work.

So plan the practical parts well, book winter dates, give it two days and reach it easily from the Somnath coast, then let the island set the pace. Pair it with Somnath and you get the perfect balance of a Gujarat trip: the first Jyotirlinga and a Portuguese island beach, back to back. That contrast is exactly why I love sending people here.

What travellers say

Real journeys planned by our team across the Somnath–Dwarka circuit.

Our Somnath Dwarka Group Tour Package with Experience My India was a memorable pilgrimage experience. Travelling with a group made the journey enjoyable, and we appreciated how the important temple visits were organised throughout the trip. Gurudutt ji was helpful and attentive, making sure our questions were answered and that we understood the plan for each day. The darshan at Somnath Jyotirlinga and Dwarkadhish Temple was especially meaningful for our family. We also enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with fellow devotees along the way. Overall, the arrangements were smooth, and we returned home feeling grateful for a well-spent spiritual journey.
