Rajkot to Gir Distance

Rajkot to Gir (Sasan Gir) is about 170 km, roughly 4 hours 45 minutes by road via GJ SH 104. Gir's nearest airport is Keshod (about 70 km), while Rajkot (about 160 km) is the better-connected one; the nearest railway station is Sasan Gir itself, with Veraval (about 45 km) and Junagadh the larger junctions. Do note that Gir National Park is open only from 16 October to 15 June.

Gir is the last home of the Asiatic lion and the most popular add-on to a Somnath and Dwarka trip. I was born on this coast and have taken travellers to the safari for years, so here is the practical, verified breakdown of how to reach Gir by road, rail and air, with the distances people actually travel from. To do the safari as part of a full circuit, our Somnath Dwarka Tour Package from Experience My India can include Gir.

How far is Rajkot to Gir forest?

Rajkot to Gir (Sasan Gir) is about 170 to 248 km depending on the route. The main options:

Route

Distance

Driving time

Via GJ SH 104 (fastest)

170 km

about 4 hr 43 min

Via Rajkot to Bhavnagar Hwy and NH 351G

188 km

about 4 hr 57 min

Via NH 151

248 km

about 5 hr 14 min

The GJ SH 104 route is the shortest and quickest, though these are hilly state roads, so allow the full time. Coming the other way, Gir forest to Rajkot is the same distance. For a comfortable door-to-door journey, Experience My India arranges a car and driver.

What is the nearest airport to Gir National Park?

Gir has no airport of its own, so every air traveller finishes by road. Per the Gujarat forest department, the closest airport is Keshod (about 70 km), a small airport with limited flights. Diu (about 100 km) is another near option. The better-connected airport is Rajkot (about 160 km), with regular flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and more and Ahmedabad (about 370 km) is the nearest international airport. Most travellers fly into Rajkot or Ahmedabad and drive on.

What is the nearest railway station to Gir?

The nearest railway station is Sasan Gir itself, right by the park, but it has very few trains. The practical railheads are Veraval (about 45 km) and Junagadh (about 65 km), both well connected, with Junagadh receiving direct trains from Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Rajkot. Rajkot (about 160 km) is the larger junction. From any of these you take a taxi or bus for the final stretch to Sasan Gir.

How to reach Gir from Mumbai

From Mumbai, Gir is about 1,000 km by road, so most travellers fly or take the train. The quickest way is to fly to Rajkot and drive about 4 to 5 hours or fly to Diu and drive about 2 hours. By train, board a service to Junagadh or Veraval, then take a taxi to Sasan Gir. Direct trains such as the Saurashtra Mail connect Mumbai with the region.

When is Gir National Park open?

This is the one thing to plan around: Gir is open for safaris from 16 October to 15 June and closed during the monsoon, from 16 June to 15 October. If you are travelling in the monsoon, the Devalia Safari Park (the interpretation zone) usually stays open year round and is a good alternative for spotting lions. Book your safari permits well ahead, especially on weekends and holidays.

What travellers say

Real journeys planned by our team across the Somnath–Dwarka circuit.

Our 1 Day Dwarka Tour Package with Experience My India was very well organized. The travel arrangements were smooth, and Gurudutt ji also helped us understand how Gir can be added to a longer Somnath and Dwarka journey. We were especially impressed by the practical guidance about travel distances and road routes. The vehicle was comfortable, the driver was polite, and the entire day went without unnecessary delays. It was a peaceful and enjoyable experience for our family.
