Somnath to Girnar Distance: Routes, Time and What to Expect

Pilgrims love adding the holy mountain of Girnar to a Somnath trip, but the drive and, more often, the name cause confusion, so let me clear both up. Somnath to Girnar Distance and Time

There are three practical driving routes and the NH151 highway is comfortably the best of them.

The two NH151 options are within a minute of each other at just under two hours, so either is fine. The SH26 route is barely longer in distance but adds half an hour, so use it only if the highway is disrupted.

Which Route Should You Take?

Take NH151. At 98.7 km and about 1 hour 58 minutes it is the shortest and fastest and it is a smooth, well-marked highway. The second NH151 variant is effectively the same drive. Keep the 99.9 km SH26 route as a backup only, since it costs you an extra half-hour for no real gain in distance.

Girnar Is Not Gir: Clearing the Confusion

This trips up more travellers than the drive does. Girnar is a sacred mountain of temples beside the city of Junagadh, famous for its long stone stairway to shrines at the summit. Gir National Park is something entirely different: the forest reserve where the Asiatic lions live, in a different direction from Somnath. How to Travel from Somnath to Girnar

The easiest way is a private cab for the day, which takes NH151 and drops you at the Girnar Taleti, the base of the climb near Junagadh. State and private buses also run between Somnath, Veraval and Junagadh for budget travellers and Junagadh has its own railway station. From the base, the temple mountain itself is a short hop; the Junagadh to Girnar distance is only about 7 km.

What Awaits at Girnar

Girnar is one of the oldest living pilgrimages in India, sacred to both Hindus and Jains and often said to be older than the Himalayas. Here is what you climb toward:

• The 9,999 steps: the traditional stone stairway to the summit temples, a serious but deeply rewarding climb.

• The Girnar ropeway: at about 2.3 km, one of the world's longest temple ropeways, it carries you up in minutes if you would rather not climb. It generally runs from around 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

• The temples: Amba Mata near the first plateau, the Gorakhnath peak, the Guru Dattatreya shrine at the very top and revered Jain temples including Neminath along the way.

• Bhavnath fair: around Maha Shivratri, the base comes alive with sadhus and a great fair, an extraordinary time to visit if you can handle crowds.

Best Time to Visit and Tips

October to March is the season for Girnar, when the weather is cool enough for the climb. Start very early if you plan to walk the steps, carry water and light snacks and wear proper shoes. Time your Somnath darshan around the current Somnath temple timings so you can leave early for the two-hour drive. How I Plan the Girnar Day

My honest advice: do not try to squeeze Girnar into the tail of a Somnath day. It deserves its own morning. I send travellers off from Somnath by around 6 am, so they reach the Taleti before the heat and either start the steps early or catch the first ropeway. The mountain is not a quick photo stop; even with the ropeway, the summit temples and the views ask for a few unhurried hours. Plan it as a full day from Somnath and back or better, stay a night near Junagadh. Done that way, Girnar becomes the highlight of the trip rather than a rushed add-on, which is exactly how Experience My India paces it.
