Gir is the only place on earth where you can see the Asiatic lion in the wild, so the rules here are stricter than at most Indian parks and that is a good thing. I am Harsh Rawat, born in Dwarka and guiding this coast for more than 8 years and I have taken thousands of families on the Gir safari as part of a wider Saurashtra trip. This guide answers that in plain language. It covers booking and entry rules, how you must behave inside the park, what is strictly prohibited, timings and seasons and the honest practical advice I give every guest before we set off. Follow these and your safari will be calm, legal and far more likely to give you a proper lion sighting.

Everything at Gir starts with the permit and this is where most first-time visitors slip up. You cannot simply drive to the gate and buy a ticket for a good slot on a busy morning.

Permits are booked online, in advance

Safari permits are issued only through the official Gujarat Forest Department online portal. Slots for the popular winter mornings often fill weeks ahead, so book as early as your dates are fixed. Original photo ID for every visitor

Each person named on the permit must carry the same original photo ID they registered with. The forest staff check names at the check post and a mismatch or a missing original can stop a guest boarding even when the rest of the group is cleared. Passports, Aadhaar, voter ID and driving licences are all accepted, but the original must be physically present.

Reach early or lose the slot

Arrive at the check post 15 to 30 minutes before your allotted time. Safari batches leave together on a schedule and a permit is treated as cancelled with no refund if you miss your slot. On a Saurashtra circuit I always build in a comfortable buffer the evening before so nobody is racing the clock at dawn.

Group and vehicle limits

A single safari gypsy carries a maximum of 6 adults and 1 child under twelve, along with a licensed naturalist or guide who must accompany every trip. You cannot take your own car into the core zone and you cannot swap in extra passengers at the gate. If you are a larger family, we simply book more than one vehicle so everyone rides together in convoy.

How You Must Behave Inside Gir

Once you pass the check post you are a guest in a living forest and the animals decide how close they come. Your conduct is the difference between a lion holding its ground and one that melts into the teak.

• Stay inside the vehicle at all times. Do not step out, stand up to lean over the frame or dangle limbs outside, even for a photo.

• Keep it quiet. Low voices only, phones on silent, no shouting to call an animal or alert another gypsy. Noise is what ends most sightings.

• Keep your distance. Never ask the driver to crowd, block or chase an animal. Let it cross and pass at its own pace.

• No flash photography. Flash startles wildlife and is not allowed near animals. Raise your ISO instead of raising a flash.

• Follow the fixed route and speed. Drivers stay on assigned tracks at controlled speeds and cannot go off route on request.

• Obey your guide. The naturalist knows the park and the law. If they say hold still or move on, that is final.

What Is Strictly Prohibited

These are the hard lines. Breaking them can end your safari on the spot and, in serious cases, invite a penalty under wildlife law.

• No plastic and no littering. Carry nothing disposable in and bring every wrapper back out. Gir is a plastic-free zone.

• No feeding the wildlife. Feeding any animal, from a deer to a lion, is banned and dangerous. It changes their behaviour and puts later visitors at risk.

• No smoking, alcohol or open fire. Nothing that can spark a forest fire is permitted anywhere inside the park.

• Wear neutral, earthy colours and skip strong perfume. Bright clothing and heavy scent disturb animals and make you easier to notice.

• No weapons, pets, explosives, spotlights or musical instruments. None of these are allowed past the gate under any circumstances.

Season, Timings and Safari Slots

Gir National Park is open to visitors from mid-October to mid-June and closes through the monsoon, roughly 16 June to 15 October, for breeding season. Safaris run in fixed morning and evening batches, with exact slot times shifting a little across the season with sunrise and sunset. What I Tell Every Guest Before We Drive In

After 8 years and more than fifty thousand travellers, I have learned that the guests who see the most are not the loudest, they are the calmest. The lion is a confident animal, but it reads tension. When a gypsy rolls up quietly and everyone keeps still, a lioness will often walk right along the track beside you. The moment someone stands up or raises their voice, she is gone.

So my honest advice is simple. Book your winter dates early because they vanish. If you only get a summer slot, do not be disappointed, that is often when sightings are best, just carry water and a hat. Wear olive or khaki, leave the perfume in the hotel and let the driver do the finding. And be straight with yourself about fit: if you need to be out of the vehicle, cannot sit quietly for a couple of hours or are travelling with a very restless toddler, the core safari may test your patience and Devalia is the gentler option.
