Best Time to Visit Gir National Park: A Month-by-Month Guide

There is no single “best” time for Gir, it depends on whether you are chasing comfortable weather, the best lion sightings, birdlife or a quiet, low-cost trip. I was born on this coast and have sent travellers into Gir in every open month, so this guide breaks the season down by exactly what you want from it, month by month. When is Gir National Park open?

Gir is open for safaris from 16 October to 15 June and closed for the monsoon from 16 June to 15 October, when the forest regenerates and breeding takes place. So every “best time” falls within that October-to-June window. The one exception is the Devalia Safari Park, a fenced interpretation zone that usually stays open year round, which is the only way to see lions during the monsoon closure.

Best time to visit Gir by season

Winter (November to February): comfort and birds

This is the most popular season and the classic answer to when to visit Gir. Days are cool and pleasant at about 10°C to 25°C, the post-monsoon grass has dried to gold and thinned out and animals gather at predictable water sources, so sightings of lions, leopards and large herds of deer are reliable. Winter is also the prime birdwatching season, as migratory birds flock to Kamleshwar Dam. It is ideal for first-timers, families and photographers who want clear light and comfort, but it is also the busiest and priciest time, so book well ahead.

Summer (March to mid-June): the best sightings

Counter-intuitively, the hot months are when serious wildlife watchers come. As temperatures climb to 40°C and beyond and the waterholes shrink, lions and other animals are driven into the open to drink, so the chance of a sighting is at its highest, especially on the first morning safari. March is still endurable; April and May are hot but rewarding and also the quietest, cheapest period of the year, with permits easy to get and accommodation at its lowest. Plan safaris for the early morning and rest in the heat of the day.

Monsoon (mid-June to mid-October): closed

From 16 June to 15 October the main park is shut. The forest turns lush and beautiful, but jungle safaris are not possible and only the Devalia Safari Park remains open for a guaranteed but more managed lion sighting.

Best time to visit Gir for what you want

For comfortable weather and easy safaris

Come between December and February. Cool, dry days make long morning and evening safaris a pleasure and clear skies are kind to photographers. Carry warm layers for the genuinely chilly early-morning drives.

For the best lion sightings and photography

Come in April and May. The heat concentrates wildlife around water, the thin vegetation gives clear views and the golden light is superb. This is the choice of serious photographers and repeat visitors who will trade comfort for the best odds of a close encounter.

For birdwatching

Come in winter, November to February, when Gir's resident birds are joined by winter migrants and Kamleshwar Dam comes alive. Gir holds well over 300 bird species and this is the season to see the most of them.

For fewer crowds and lower costs

Two windows work well: late October and November, just after the park reopens, when the forest is still green and the December rush has not started; and April to May, the hot, quiet shoulder season when permits are easy and prices drop. Both let you enjoy Gir without the peak-season crowds.

How long should you stay and how many safaris?

To give yourself a fair chance of a lion sighting, plan at least two safaris across different sessions and, ideally, different routes, since sightings are never guaranteed on a single drive. That usually means one full day and two nights near Sasan Gir: an evening safari on arrival, a morning safari the next day and time to reach the reception centre relaxed. Serious wildlife watchers often do three or four safaris over two days for the best odds.

Beyond the safari: things to do at Gir

Gir is more than the jeep trail. You can spot marsh crocodiles and waterbirds at Kamleshwar Dam, meet the pastoral Maldhari community who share the forest with the lions, learn at the interpretation centre, take guided nature walks in the buffer zones and visit the Devalia Safari Park for a near-certain sighting. Many resorts also lay on evening bonfires and folk performances in the cool winter months.

Tips for the best Gir experience

Book early: permits open about 90 days ahead and sell out fast in December and January and on weekends, so reserve 45 to 60 days before at least.

Do multiple safaris, morning and evening, to improve your chances and take the first or last slot of the day.

Match the month to your goal: winter for comfort, April and May for sightings, late October and November for greenery and quiet.

Dress for the season: warm layers for winter mornings, light neutral cottons for summer and always carry water, a hat and binoculars.

Carry original IDs for everyone on the permit and reach the reception centre 30 minutes early.
