Prohibited Items and Electronics

This is the rule that surprises most first-time visitors, so know it before you arrive. Somnath enforces a strict ban on electronics inside the temple. Mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, laptops and tablets are all strictly prohibited within the complex. The good news is that a free cloakroom with lockers is provided near the entrance, so you store every electronic item there before going in and collect it on your way out. Plan for this by agreeing a meeting point with your group in advance, since you will not be able to call or message once inside.

• No gadgets: mobile phones, cameras, smartwatches, laptops and tablets are strictly banned inside.

• Free cloakroom: store all prohibited electronics in the free lockers near the entrance before going in.

• No photography: taking photos or videos inside the temple premises is not allowed.

• Restricted goods: leather items, smoking, alcohol, tobacco and non-vegetarian food are forbidden in the entire temple area.

These rules apply across the whole temple area, not just the inner sanctum, so leave leather belts and wallets with your other belongings and never carry tobacco or food into the complex.

Somnath Temple Dress Code

Somnath expects modest, respectful dress. Both men and women should wear modest, traditional or formal clothing that covers the shoulders and the legs. You do not need elaborate traditional wear, but you must avoid anything short or revealing. Helpfully, rental stoles are available at the entrance if you need to cover up.

In short, cover your shoulders and legs and you will walk straight in. If you turn up in something too short, use a rental stole at the entrance rather than turning back.

Footwear and Entry Rules

As at every major temple, footwear must be removed before you enter. Leave all shoes and sandals at the free footwear deposit counters near the entrance, alongside the cloakroom for your electronics. Wearing simple slip-on sandals makes this quick and easy. After the deposit counters and a short security check, you proceed to the temple barefoot. Because you cannot carry a phone, note the layout and your locker number carefully so collection is smooth on the way out.

Somnath Temple Timings and Aarti

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM and the daily aartis take place at 7:00 AM, 12:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Official Bookings and Avoiding Touts

An important rule for your safety and money: use only the Shree Somnath Trust portal for room bookings and pooja registrations and avoid third-party agents who may overcharge or mislead you. The Trust runs official guest houses and manages special poojas and VIP darshan through its own website. Conduct and Etiquette Inside the Temple

Beyond the formal rules, a little etiquette makes your visit respectful and calm. Maintain silence or speak softly inside, follow the queue and the guards' directions and do not push during busy aarti hours. Photography being banned, simply take in the darshan with your eyes rather than a lens. Dispose of nothing in the premises and keep children close. Practical Tips for a Smooth Visit

• Leave your phone in the hotel or car if you can, to save cloakroom queues and carry only essentials.

• Wear slip-on sandals and modest, light cotton clothing suited to the coastal weather.

• Agree a meeting point with your group before entering, since you cannot call once inside.

• Carry a little cash for offerings and lockers and avoid leather wallets and belts.

• Arrive early for a calm darshan and use a private cab so you can safely leave phones and bags in the vehicle.
