The twelve Jyotirlingas
The Jyotirlingas are twelve especially sacred shrines of Lord Shiva, spread across India. They are, by tradition: Somnath (Gujarat), Mallikarjuna (Andhra Pradesh), Mahakaleshwar (Madhya Pradesh), Omkareshwar (Madhya Pradesh), Kedarnath (Uttarakhand), Bhimashankar (Maharashtra), Kashi Vishwanath (Uttar Pradesh), Trimbakeshwar (Maharashtra), Vaidyanath (Jharkhand), Nageshwar (Gujarat, near Dwarka), Rameshwaram (Tamil Nadu) and Grishneshwar (Maharashtra).
Two of the twelve — Somnath and Nageshwar — lie in Gujarat, which is why the Somnath–Dwarka circuit is central to a jyotirlinga pilgrimage.
