Somnath to Statue of Unity Distance: Routes, Time and How to Reach

Somnath to Statue of Unity is about 564 km by road via NH 51, roughly 9 hours of driving. The nearest city is Vadodara, and the statue is closed on Mondays. Experience My India can add the Statue of Unity to your Somnath or Dwarka trip.
I am Harsh Rawat, born in Dwarka and I have spent more than eight years planning Gujarat trips for travellers who want to see both the old temples and the modern marvel that is the Statue of Unity. Somnath and the statue sit at opposite ends of the state, so the drive is long and worth planning well. I handle these trips for the Somnath Dwarka Tour Package team, a unit of Experience My India. In this guide I set out the real Somnath to Statue of Unity distance both ways, the routes and timings, the nearest city, the all-important Monday closure and how to reach it by road, train or air.

How far is Somnath to Statue of Unity?
Somnath to the Statue of Unity is about 564 km by road via NH 51, taking roughly 9 hours of driving, with other routes running between 547 and 564 km. The statue stands at Ekta Nagar, formerly Kevadia, in the Narmada district of eastern Gujarat, while Somnath is on the far western coast, so this is a full day on the road. Here are the main driving routes from Somnath.
Route | Distance | Driving time |
via NH 51 (fastest) | 564 km | 8 hr 54 min |
via NH 151 (shortest) | 547 km | 9 hr 50 min |
via NH 151 and Jasdan to Ahmedabad Hwy | 558 km | 10 hr 40 min |
What are the best routes from Somnath?
Three routes carry most of the traffic, trading distance against speed:
NH 51 (about 564 km, 8 hr 54 min): the fastest and the usual choice for a single long driving day.
NH 151 (about 547 km, 9 hr 50 min): the shortest on the map, though a little slower overall.
NH 151 and the Jasdan to Ahmedabad Highway (about 558 km, 10 hr 40 min): a middle option that swings through Ahmedabad, handy if you want a break there.
Because it is a long haul, many travellers break the journey at Ahmedabad or Vadodara or use a private cab with a driver so they can rest along the way.
How far is Statue of Unity to Somnath?
The return is similar, with small differences from one-way stretches and route choices. The main options:
Route | Distance | Driving time |
via NH 51 (fastest) | 561 km | 9 hr 16 min |
via NH 151 (shortest) | 546 km | 10 hr 4 min |
via NH 64 and NH 151 | 575 km | 11 hr 20 min |
So NH 51 is the quickest either way and NH 151 the shortest. On a round trip, coming one way and returning the other lets you see more of Gujarat.
How do you reach the Statue of Unity from Somnath?
There is no need to drive the whole way if you would rather not. The practical options:
By road: a single long day of about 9 hours via NH 51, best broken at Ahmedabad or Vadodara.
By train: the statue has its own station, Ekta Nagar, about 5 km away, with direct trains from Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat; travel from Somnath via Ahmedabad and connect onward.
By air: fly from the region to Vadodara, the nearest airport at about 90 km, then drive to Ekta Nagar in roughly 2 hours.
Because it sits at the other end of the state, the statue is often added to a wider Gujarat itinerary rather than as a quick side trip. Our Gujarat tour packages can fold the Statue of Unity in with the temples and the coast on one planned route.
Which city is nearest to the Statue of Unity?
The statue stands at Ekta Nagar, the township at the site itself. The nearest major city and the practical base for most visitors, is Vadodara, about 90 km away, roughly a 2 hour drive. For context:
Vadodara: about 90 km, the nearest big city, airport and major railway junction.
Surat: about 150 km, another common approach from the south.
Ahmedabad: about 200 km, with the most flights and trains for far-away visitors.
Which day is the Statue of Unity closed?
The Statue of Unity is closed every Monday, without exception, for maintenance. This single detail catches thousands of visitors out each year, so plan around it. On the other days it is open Tuesday to Sunday, roughly 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with last entry in the late afternoon. Book the viewing gallery slot online in advance, especially on weekends and holidays and carry a photo ID for entry. If you are driving nine hours from Somnath, the last thing you want is to arrive on a Monday.
How do you go from Dwarka to the Statue of Unity?
Dwarka lies further west than Somnath, so Dwarka to the Statue of Unity is longer, roughly 700 km and about 12 hours by road. The practical route runs via Rajkot and Ahmedabad toward Ekta Nagar. Most travellers from Dwarka do not drive it in one go; they either break the journey overnight around Ahmedabad or take a train toward Ahmedabad or Vadodara and connect to Ekta Nagar station or fly into Vadodara and drive the last 90 km. However you come, remember the Monday closure and book the statue slot ahead.

What I tell travellers about this trip
I am honest that Somnath and the Statue of Unity are a long way apart and that surprises people who imagine Gujarat as small. Nine hours of driving is a real day, so I never squeeze the statue in as an afterthought. If it matters to you, I build the trip around it: a night in Ahmedabad or Vadodara, an early arrival at Ekta Nagar on a day that is not Monday and the viewing gallery booked in advance. Get those three things right and it is a wonderful addition to a temple trip. Get the Monday wrong and you drive all that way to closed gates. That is exactly the kind of detail our planning exists to catch and it is how Experience My India keeps these long Gujarat routes smooth.
