Delhi to Junagadh Distance: Flight, Train and Road Guide

The Delhi to Junagadh distance is about 1,327 km, around 22 hours by road via the Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway. As it is a long drive across Rajasthan and Gujarat, most travellers fly to Rajkot, Diu or Ahmedabad and continue by road, or take a train to Junagadh, to reach the historic city at the foot of Mount Girnar.
Delhi, the national capital, lies a long way from Junagadh, the ancient city at the foot of Girnar in Saurashtra, Gujarat and the gateway to the Gir lion country, so the journey needs some planning. This guide, from the team behind Somnath Dwarka Tour Package, a unit of Experience My India, covers the Delhi to Junagadh distance and the reverse, the route options, the travel time and every way to reach the city, by flight, train and road.
Delhi to Junagadh distance and travel time
The Delhi to Junagadh distance is about 1,327 km by the fastest route and the drive takes around 22 hours by road via the Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway, down through Rajasthan and Gujarat to Junagadh. This is a long journey of about a day of continuous driving, so very few people drive it in one go. For most travellers, a flight to Rajkot, Diu or Ahmedabad, followed by a road transfer or a train directly to Junagadh, is a far easier and more comfortable way to reach the city than the long drive. Flying, in particular, turns a day-long journey into a matter of hours, which is why most travellers from Delhi choose to fly rather than drive all the way to Saurashtra.
Delhi to Junagadh route options
There are three main ways to drive from Delhi to Junagadh:
Route | Distance | Approx time |
Via Udaipur-Ahmedabad Hwy (fastest) | About 1,327 km | About 21 hr 51 min |
Via NE 4 | About 1,363 km | About 22 hr 52 min |
Via NH 754A (slower) | About 1,340 km | About 26 hours |
The Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway route is the fastest and shortest at about 1,327 km in around 22 hours, running down through Rajasthan via Udaipur and into Gujarat via Ahmedabad. The route via NE 4, the expressway, is similar in time, while the route via NH 754A is slower at around 26 hours. For a road journey the Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway is the standard choice, though flying or the train is easier for most over such a distance.
Junagadh to Delhi distance
The return journey, the Junagadh to Delhi distance, is much the same, about 1,309 km in around 22 hours via NE 4 or the Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway. The route options for the reverse direction are:
Route | Distance | Approx time |
Via NE 4 (fastest) | About 1,309 km | About 21 hr 35 min |
Via NH 47 and NE 4 | About 1,311 km | About 22 hr 4 min |
Via NH 754A (slower) | About 1,317 km | About 25 hours |
As on the outward journey, the NE 4 and Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway routes are the fastest at around 22 hours, while the route via NH 754A is slower at around 25 hours. This is a long drive in either direction, so the flight and train options are well worth considering over the road for most travellers heading to or from the city.
How to travel from Delhi to Junagadh
Given the long distance, it is worth weighing all the options:
By air | Delhi to Rajkot, Diu or Ahmedabad, then a road transfer, the fastest option |
By train | Direct or connecting trains to Junagadh Junction |
By car or taxi | Around 22 hours, a long day or two of driving |
By bus | Long-distance buses, generally with a change, around 24 hours or more |
Delhi to Junagadh by air
Flying is by far the fastest and easiest way to reach Junagadh from Delhi. The nearest airports to Junagadh are Keshod, about 40 km away, Rajkot, about 100 km away and Diu, about 100 km away, with Ahmedabad, the major hub, about 330 km away. Delhi has frequent flights to Ahmedabad in about an hour and a half and flights to Rajkot and, with a connection, to Diu. From whichever airport you land at, a road transfer or a Somnath Dwarka taxi service, completes the journey to Junagadh. Flying to Rajkot or Diu and driving on is the quickest way to reach the city from Delhi.
Delhi to Junagadh by train
The train is a popular way to travel from Delhi to Junagadh for those who prefer rail, as Junagadh has its own railway station, Junagadh Junction, in the heart of the city. There are direct and connecting train services from Delhi towards Junagadh, often via Ahmedabad. The rail journey is long, often around 24 to 30 hours or more, so it is best suited to those who enjoy train travel and have the time. Comfortable overnight and long-distance services make it manageable and arriving right in Junagadh is convenient. For the wider access options, see our how to reach Somnath guide, as the Somnath coast is nearby.
Delhi to Junagadh by road
If you wish to drive, a private car with a driver is the most comfortable way to cover the long distance, though it is best planned as a journey of a day or two with an overnight halt rather than a single stretch of over 20 hours. The Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway route via Rajasthan and Gujarat is the fastest and smoothest, with plentiful fuel stations, dhabas and rest stops along the way. Self-drive is possible but demanding over such a distance, so most prefer a driver or better still a flight or train. If you do drive, breaking the journey at cities like Udaipur or Ahmedabad makes it far more pleasant and Experience My India can help arrange the local legs and the onward Junagadh sightseeing.
Delhi to Junagadh by bus
Long-distance buses connect Delhi towards Gujarat, though usually with a change, often at Ahmedabad, from where you continue to Junagadh by another bus or a car. The total journey by bus takes around 24 hours or more, so it is a long haul, best on comfortable air-conditioned sleeper services. Buses are the most budget-friendly way to travel, but for such a long journey a flight is far quicker and a train more comfortable and direct, so buses are usually a last choice for reaching Junagadh from Delhi.
Why travel from Delhi to Junagadh?
Junagadh is one of the most historic and rewarding cities in Gujarat, well worth the journey from Delhi. At its heart stands the ancient Uparkot Fort, over two thousand years old, with its rock-cut stepwells, Buddhist caves and cannons, while the ornate Mahabat Maqbara, with its spiral-staircase minarets, is one of India's most striking monuments. The city also holds the Ashokan rock edicts, carved around 250 BCE, the Bhavnath temple at the foot of Girnar and the Narsinh Mehta sites. Above the city rises the sacred mountain of Girnar, climbed by nearly 9,999 steps or the ropeway to the Dattatreya temple at its summit. Junagadh is also the gateway to the Gir lion sanctuary and lies close to the Somnath temple, so a trip from Delhi can combine history, pilgrimage and wildlife.
Best time to make the trip
The best time to travel from Delhi to Junagadh is the cooler season, October to March, when the weather is pleasant for exploring the forts, monuments and the Girnar climb, in line with the best time to visit Gujarat. The summer, April to June, is hot and makes sightseeing and the climb tiring and the monsoon, July to September, brings rain, so winter is ideal. If you plan to add a Gir lion safari nearby, note that the safari zones close during the monsoon, roughly mid-June to mid-October. The great Girnar Parikrama in November and the Bhavnath fair in February or March are special but very busy times. Whenever you travel, flying is the most comfortable option for the long distance.
