Rann of Kutch 2026-27: Rann Utsav Dates, Tent City and Complete Guide

Rann Utsav 2026-27, the White Desert festival of the Great Rann of Kutch, runs from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, centred on the Dhordo Tent City near Bhuj. It offers luxury tents, Kutchi culture, desert activities and glowing full-moon nights. Experience My India can help plan your Rann of Kutch trip.
The Rann of Kutch is one of the world's largest salt deserts and each winter its White Rann becomes the setting for Rann Utsav, Gujarat's spectacular desert festival. This guide, from the team behind Somnath Dwarka Tour Package, a unit of Experience My India, covers the 2026-27 dates, the Dhordo tent city, the highlights and activities, the best time to go, how to reach it and the places to see around Kutch, so you can plan the trip with confidence.
When is Rann Utsav 2026-27?
Rann Utsav 2026-27 is scheduled to run from 1 November 2026 to 7 March 2027, roughly four months across the pleasant winter season. The festival is organised by Gujarat Tourism, which confirms the exact opening and closing dates fresh each year and a few operators list slightly different dates, so it is always worth checking the official portal before you book. The tent city operates daily through the season, from the early November opening to the early March close.
What is the Rann of Kutch and Rann Utsav?
The Great Rann of Kutch is a vast white salt desert in the Kutch district of Gujarat, spanning roughly 26,000 square kilometres. After the monsoon dries out, its most famous stretch, the White Rann near the border village of Dhordo, turns into an endless sheet of cracked white salt that glows silver under the moon. Since 2005, Gujarat Tourism has raised a temporary tent city here each winter for Rann Utsav, filling it with Kutchi folk music and dance, handicrafts, desert safaris and nights under a big desert sky. It is a secular cultural and tourism festival and today it is the largest tent-stay festival in India.
Rann Utsav 2026-27 highlights
The festival pairs an otherworldly landscape with rich culture and activity:
The White Desert: vast salt marshes that shine bright by day and glow surreal under moonlit skies.
Tent city stay: Swiss-style luxury tents with modern amenities, dining areas and craft markets.
Cultural programmes: traditional Kutchi folk dance, live music and regional art displays.
Adventure activities: paramotoring, camel cart rides, ATV rides and star gazing.
Best time to visit the Rann of Kutch
The White Rann is at its most magical after dark, so timing matters:
Full-moon nights: the most sought-after dates, when the salt flats glow silver and photography is unforgettable. There is roughly one full moon a month through the season, so plan around it.
Dark, new-moon nights: best for stargazing, when the desert glows only with starlight.
January and February: the most pleasant, cool weather for daytime exploring, though also the busiest.
Check the official portal for the exact full-moon and special dates each month and book well ahead for peak periods like Diwali, the Christmas to New Year stretch, the Kite Festival on 14 January and the Republic Day weekend.
How to reach the Rann of Kutch and Dhordo
The tent city sits near Dhordo, about 80 to 90 km from Bhuj, the district's main town. Bhuj is the gateway:
By air: Bhuj has its own airport, with flights from Mumbai and Ahmedabad; larger connections come via Ahmedabad.
By train: Bhuj railway station is well connected, including to Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
By road: from Bhuj it is roughly a two to three hour drive to Dhordo, with scheduled transfers available from the tent city.
Carry a photo ID, as the White Rann is a border area and a permit is checked on the way, usually arranged at the checkpost near Bhirandiyara.
Rann Utsav tent city stay and booking
The Dhordo tent city offers hundreds of tents across categories, from Non-AC tents to Deluxe and Premium tents and the royal Rajwadi tents, with packages typically starting around ₹6,300 per person and covering the stay, meals, cultural evenings, a White Rann visit and internal transfers. Reservations are best made through the official Rann Utsav portal and it pays to book early, as the popular dates and premium tents sell out weeks in advance. Experience My India can also arrange the trip as part of a wider Gujarat tour package.
Things to do at Rann Utsav
Beyond the white desert itself, the festival packs in plenty:
Watch the sunset and moonrise: the salt flats change colour through the evening, the highlight of any visit.
Try the adventures: paramotoring for aerial views, ATV and camel cart rides and star gazing after dark.
Enjoy the culture: Kutchi folk performances, live music and craft demonstrations each evening.
Shop the crafts: Kutch is famous for embroidery, bandhani, leatherwork and mirror-work, sold at the craft markets.
Taste Kutchi and Gujarati food, part of the wider famous food of Gujarat.
Places to visit around the Rann of Kutch
Give yourself an extra day or two to see Kutch beyond the tent city:
Kala Dungar (Black Hill): the highest point in Kutch, with sweeping views over the Rann and the Dattatreya temple.
India Bridge and the border viewpoint: a dramatic frontier landscape near the tent city.
Bhuj: the Aina Mahal, Prag Mahal, the Kutch Museum and the old walled city.
Mandvi: a relaxed beach town with the Vijay Vilas Palace and a historic shipbuilding yard.
The craft villages: Nirona, Ajrakhpur and Bhujodi, famous for Rogan art, block printing and weaving.
Tips for visiting Rann Utsav 2026-27
A few pointers make the trip smoother:
Book your tent and full-moon dates well in advance, as they sell out fast.
Carry a photo ID for the border permit and keep it handy at the checkpost.
Pack warm layers, as desert nights get cold even in a mild winter.
Do not underestimate distances; Dhordo is far from Bhuj, so plan travel time and fuel.
Carry sunglasses and sunscreen for the bright daytime glare off the salt.

Combine the Rann of Kutch with the rest of Gujarat
Kutch pairs well with a wider Gujarat trip. Many travellers add the Saurashtra coast, driving on to Somnath, the first Jyotirlinga and Dwarka, Lord Krishna's city or the Girnar climb via our Junagadh to Girnar guide. Plan the season with the best time to visit Gujarat and for the coast see how to reach Dwarka. A Somnath Dwarka taxi service can handle the long-distance legs.
