Gir Jungle Trail: The Core Lion Safari Experience at Gir

The Gir Jungle Trail is the core safari experience inside Gir National Park, a 3-hour open-top jeep ride deep into the forest to see wild Asiatic lions, leopards and other wildlife. It runs on 13 designated routes assigned at random, with permits booked online in advance. Private vehicles and walking are not allowed inside the core forest.
The Gir Jungle Trail is the real thing, the true wild safari into the heart of Gir National Park, the last place on Earth where the Asiatic lion roams free. This guide, from the team behind Somnath Dwarka Tour Package, a unit of Experience My India, covers what the Gir Jungle Trail is, what the safari is like, the 13 routes, the rules, the connectivity and how to book it.
What is the Gir Jungle Trail?
The Gir Jungle Trail is the primary, core safari experience inside Gir National Park, in Gujarat, famously the last remaining natural habitat on Earth where the endangered Asiatic lion survives in the wild. It is a roughly 3-hour open-top jeep or gypsy, safari that takes you deep into the rugged dry deciduous forest in search of lions, leopards, nilgai, deer and the park's diverse birdlife. Unlike the fenced Devalia zone, the Jungle Trail is the open, wild forest, where the animals roam free and nothing is guaranteed, which is exactly what makes it so thrilling. This is the safari most people mean when they talk about going to Gir, the genuine wilderness experience of tracking the king of the forest in his own domain. To ride the Gir Jungle Trail is to enter one of the great wildlife landscapes of India.

What the Gir Jungle Trail safari is like
The Gir Jungle Trail is a 3-hour drive through the wild forest in an open-top gypsy, with a trained driver and a forest guide who read the signs of the jungle for you. You set out at your booked time, early morning or evening, into the deciduous forest of teak, acacia and grassland, following the forest tracks. Along the way you watch for the lions, of course, but also for leopards, the many deer and antelope, the crocodiles near the water and the rich birdlife overhead. The thrill lies in the search, the alarm calls of the deer, the fresh pugmarks on the track, the sudden hush when a predator is near and then, if you are lucky, the sight of a wild Asiatic lion resting in the dappled shade or walking down the track. Every safari is different, every drive a new chance and even without a lion, the forest and its creatures make it a memorable ride. This is wildlife as it was meant to be, wild, free and unscripted.
The 13 safari routes and how they are assigned
A distinctive feature of the Gir Jungle Trail is its route system. The park uses 13 designated safari routes through the forest and to distribute the vehicle traffic evenly and protect the ecosystem, your route is not chosen by you but assigned at random by an automated system at the entry gate when you arrive. This means every visitor takes a fair share of the different parts of the forest, no single area is overloaded and the wildlife is disturbed as little as possible. It also means you cannot pick a route reputed for more sightings, which keeps the experience genuinely wild and fair for all. Whichever of the 13 routes you are given, you are in good hands with your guide and lions can be seen on any of them, so there is no bad route, only the luck of the draw and the magic of the forest.
The rules of the Gir Jungle Trail
The Gir Jungle Trail is strictly controlled by the government to preserve the ecosystem and keep visitors safe and it is important to understand the rules:
No private vehicles. You cannot drive your own vehicle into the core sanctuary; the safari is only in an authorised gypsy with a driver and guide.
No walking or hiking. Walking safaris and hiking are completely prohibited inside the core sanctuary boundaries, because of the high density of large predators. You stay in the vehicle at all times.
Stay with your guide and vehicle. Follow the instructions of your guide and driver at all times, keep noise down and never attempt to get out or approach the animals.
Photography without flash. Photography is allowed, but without flash and without disturbing the wildlife; respect the animals and the forest.
These rules exist to protect both the lions and the visitors and they are strictly enforced. They are also part of why Gir has been such a conservation success, the forest and its predators are given the space and quiet they need.
Connectivity: no network in the core forest
One practical point that surprises many first-time visitors is that cellular network connectivity drops entirely once you are inside the core forest of the Gir Jungle Trail. There is no mobile signal deep in the sanctuary, which is part of the charm, a true digital escape into the wild, but it means you must prepare in advance. Download all your digital permits, tickets and any offline maps before you arrive at the gate, as you will not be able to pull them up from the cloud once inside. Let your family know you will be out of reach for the few hours of the safari. This disconnection is a small price for the experience and many find it a welcome part of being fully present in the forest, with nothing between you and the wild.
How to book the Gir Jungle Trail
Permits for the Gir Jungle Trail are 100 percent digital and must be secured well in advance, often months ahead for peak dates, through the official government portal, the Gir Lion booking system run by the Gujarat forest department. It is important to book only through the official portal and to avoid unofficial third-party sites, which frequently charge highly inflated rates. The slots are capped by government quota to protect the forest, so they sell out early, especially for the prized morning safaris and weekends. The costs are covered in our Gir safari ticket price guide and the daily safari slots and schedule in our Gir National Park timings guide. When you book, you choose your date and time slot, enter the names and photo ID of all travellers and carry the printed e-permit and original ID on the day. A tour operator can also handle the booking and logistics for you.
Best time for the Gir Jungle Trail
The best time for the Gir Jungle Trail is the winter season, roughly October through March, which offers crisp morning air, comfortable travel conditions and historically the highest Asiatic lion sighting rates, as covered in our best time to visit Gir guide. The forest officially reopens for the season in mid-October, following its annual monsoon closure from mid-June, so the earliest you can ride the trail is around 16 October. The hot summer months of April and May, though less comfortable, can also give excellent sightings as the lions gather near the shrinking water. Within the day, the early morning safari is best, when the predators are most active before the heat. Whenever you go, book your slot early and come prepared for the wild.
Tips for the Gir Jungle Trail
A few pointers make your safari better:
Book only through the official Gir Lion portal and well in advance, avoiding inflated third-party sites.
Download your permits, tickets and maps before you reach the gate, as there is no network inside.
Take the early morning slot for the best predator activity and the finest light.
Wear neutral, earthy colours and warm layers for the cold early morning drive.
Stay in the vehicle at all times and follow your guide, as walking is prohibited for safety.
Do more than one safari if you can, as sightings are never guaranteed on a single wild drive.
