Vadodara to Gir Distance: Routes, Time and Travel Guide

The Vadodara to Gir distance is about 440 km, and the drive takes around 7 hours 33 minutes via NH 51. The same route covers the Gir to Vadodara distance. You can also travel by train to Junagadh or Veraval, or fly to Rajkot or Diu, then a road transfer to Sasan Gir.
Vadodara, one of Gujarat's largest cities, is a common starting point for a lion safari at Gir, the last home of the Asiatic lion. This guide, from the team behind Somnath Dwarka Tour Package, a unit of Experience My India, covers the Vadodara to Gir distance and the reverse, the route options, the travel time and every way to reach the sanctuary, by car, train and air.
Vadodara to Gir distance and travel time
The Vadodara to Gir distance is about 440 km by the fastest road and the drive takes around 7 hours 33 minutes by car under normal conditions. The quickest route runs via NH 51, heading south and west across Gujarat and Saurashtra towards Sasan Gir, the main village and gateway to the national park. Shorter routes using the Ahmedabad to Dholera Expressway exist, at about 388 to 410 km, but take a similar or slightly longer time. Vadodara sits in central Gujarat and Gir in the south of Saurashtra, so this is a substantial drive, best allowed a full day or broken with an overnight halt or made easier by train or a flight.
Vadodara to Gir route options

For most journeys the NH 51 route is the best choice, balancing distance and speed on good highway to the sanctuary.
Gir to Vadodara distance

By car or taxi | About 7 hr 33 min, the most flexible and comfortable option |
By train | To Junagadh or Veraval, then a road transfer to Sasan Gir |

By bus | State and private buses via Junagadh, around 8 to 10 hours |
Vadodara to Gir by road
Driving is a popular way to reach Gir from Vadodara on the good NH 51 highway. The road heads south and west across Gujarat and Saurashtra, passing near Ahmedabad and Rajkot and through the Junagadh area, before reaching Sasan Gir. A private car with a driver is the most comfortable choice on this long drive, letting you break the journey and reach Gir in good time to rest before an early safari; a Somnath Dwarka taxi service can arrange this. Self-drive is also fine on these well-marked highways, with plentiful fuel stations, dhabas and rest stops along the way. Experience My India can handle the Vadodara pickup and the whole journey and safari.
Vadodara to Gir by train
Vadodara is a major railway junction and trains run towards Junagadh and Veraval, the nearest major railheads to Gir, from where a road transfer of 1 to 2 hours reaches Sasan Gir. The rail journey typically takes around 9 to 12 hours depending on the service and connections, with overnight options that let you sleep on the way. Trains are an economical and comfortable choice for the long distance, so they are popular; check the timetable and connections and book ahead in the peak season. For the railheads near the park, see our railway station near Gir National Park guide.
Vadodara to Gir by air
The nearest airports to Gir are Rajkot, about 160 km away, Keshod, about 90 km away and Diu, about 110 km away, with Ahmedabad the major hub. Vadodara has its own airport, so some travellers take a connecting flight towards Rajkot or Diu and then continue to Sasan Gir by road, though for a journey within Gujarat many simply travel by road or train. If you are flying in from farther afield, a flight to Rajkot or Diu followed by a road transfer is a good way to reach Gir. Plan your visit around the how to reach Gir guide for all the options.
Vadodara to Gir by bus
State-run GSRTC buses and private operators connect Vadodara with Junagadh and the towns near Gir, taking around 8 to 10 hours by road via Ahmedabad and Rajkot, from where a local transfer reaches Sasan Gir. Options range from ordinary and express buses to more comfortable air-conditioned and sleeper services on the private side, including overnight buses. Buses are the most budget-friendly way to travel, though a car is faster and more convenient for reaching the sanctuary and getting around for the safari.
Break the journey along the way
Because the drive is fairly long, breaking it can make it more pleasant and the route passes some of Gujarat's best sights. Rajkot and Junagadh, with its Uparkot fort and Girnar, make natural halts and with a small detour you can add Somnath, the first Jyotirlinga near Gir. Turning the transfer into a two-day journey with a stop lets you combine the lion safari with the region's great temples and sights and arrive at Sasan Gir refreshed and ready for an early morning safari.
Why start your Gir trip from Vadodara?
Vadodara is one of Gujarat's largest and most connected cities, with an airport, a major railway junction and excellent road links, which makes it a convenient starting point for a Gir safari. From Vadodara you can reach Gir in about 7 to 8 hours by road and the city also connects easily to Somnath and Dwarka for a wider Saurashtra tour combining a lion safari with the great temples of the coast. The city itself, with its palaces and heritage, is worth a little time before you head to the sanctuary.
Best time to make the trip
The best time to travel from Vadodara to Gir is the cooler season, December to March, when the long drive is pleasant and wildlife sightings are good, while April to June, though hotter, offer the best chances of seeing lions near water, as covered in our best time to visit Gir. Gir National Park's safari zones close during the monsoon, roughly mid-June to mid-October, so plan your trip outside these months. Reach Gir the day before, so you can rest for an early morning safari and check the Gir forest weather for the season before you set off.
Tips for the Vadodara to Gir journey
A few pointers make the long trip smoother:
Use the NH 51 route for the fastest, smoothest overall drive to the sanctuary.
Consider an overnight halt at Rajkot or Junagadh to split the long drive comfortably.
Take an overnight train to Junagadh or Veraval, then a short road transfer to Sasan Gir, if you prefer not to drive.
Book your Gir safari permit well in advance, as slots are limited and sell out in the peak season.
Add Somnath or Girnar on the way to combine a safari with a temple visit.
Avoid the monsoon, roughly mid-June to mid-October, when the Gir safari zones are closed.
