The classic 7-day Gujarat itinerary

This week-long plan captures the best of Gujarat, from the desert to the coast to the forest. It is fast-paced and covers long distances, so a car with a driver helps enormously and you can slow it down by dropping a region or adding days:

• Day 1, Ahmedabad: arrive and explore the old walled city and its carved wooden havelis, the Sabarmati Ashram, the Adalaj stepwell and, if time allows, the Calico textile museum or Kankaria lake.

• Day 2, Ahmedabad to Kutch: drive to Bhuj, breaking at the Modhera Sun Temple and the Rani ki Vav stepwell at Patan on the way.
